Turmeric (curcuma longa) has also been used medicinally for centuries, in Ayurvedic medicine it is considered an effective treatment for digestive complaints, inflammation and rheumatic diseases. The part of the spice that gives it its vivid yellow colour is called curcumin, curcumin is the biologically active ingredient to which the health boosting properties of Turmeric are associated. Curcumin belongs to a group of compounds called curcuminoids. Black pepper contains a constituent called piperine, which acts in the liver and helps to slow the breakdown of curcumin. Confirmed by several studies, the bioavailability of curcumin has been shown to be significantly higher when combined with piperine. In fact, in one particular study in humans, it was observed that a dose of 2g of curcumin with just 20mg of piperine produced an astounding 2000% increase in bioavailability.
